About Sleep Dentistry

You’re not asleep in the way you would be under general anaesthetic. You remain conscious and responsive throughout. Most patients describe it as deeply relaxed, some remember little of the appointment at all.

How Sleep Dentistry Works for You?
In the chair at Designer Smiles Sydney, you will be covered with a warm blanket and a blood pressure cuff wrapped around one arm.
You then receive a combination of sedative and pain-relieving drugs (alternatively, “happy gas”) to create a drowsy and dream-like state – not quite awake or asleep. You will be undisturbed by the noises, tastes, sights and smells of the dental procedure. There is no pain or anxiety.
Yet you are still able to co-operate with Dr Nalbandian or one of his sleep dentist team when asked. Afterwards, you won’t remember it but will have a heightened sense of wellbeing.
Your Sedation Sleep Dentistry Options

IV sedation
Administered directly into the bloodstream, IV sedation produces a deeply relaxed, drowsy state. You remain conscious and able to respond, but most patients have little to no memory of the procedure afterwards. It is suited to patients with significant dental anxiety or those undergoing longer or more complex treatment.
Nitrous oxide (happy gas)
Inhaled through a small mask, nitrous oxide takes effect quickly and wears off just as fast. It takes the edge off anxiety without the deeper sedative effect of IV sedation, and patients can typically drive home afterwards. It suits patients with mild to moderate anxiety.
The Wand
The Wand is a computer-controlled local anaesthetic delivery system; it is not a sedation method. It delivers anaesthetic slowly and at a consistent rate, which makes the injection itself significantly more comfortable. It is particularly useful for patients whose anxiety centres on needles rather than the procedure itself.
